Classroom Assessment Scoring System™

The Classroom Assessment Scoring System™ (CLASS™) is an observational tool that focuses on teacher-student interactions within classrooms and is designed to increase teacher effectiveness. Developed at the University of Virginia's Curry School of Education, the CLASS™ is distributed by Teachstone.

Teachstone is also the provider of training on the CLASS™ as well as research on the use of the tool.

The staff of the Program Assessment Center are currently trained and certified on the Infant CLASS, the Toddler CLASS, and the Pre-K CLASS. Staff members participate in annual recertification activities and conduct periodic internal reliability checks to maintain a high degree of fidelity with the CLASS instrument.

There are different versions of the CLASS for different age levels. The three tools that are used with children in the early childhood years are:

  • Infant CLASS - for children birth to 18 months
  • Toddler CLASS - for children 15 to 36 months
  • Pre-K CLASS - for children 3 to 5 years

Each of the CLASS tools is organized in terms of domains and dimensions for measuring teacher-child interactions, as seen in the table below:
